Girlband! & Tom A Smith Gig - Sunday 26 Jan 2025
What a night at Social on Humber Street, Hull on Sunday sadly I missed Rothco, but if they were half as good as Tom A Smith and Girlband! they will have been special.
Tom A. Smith was first on stage for me and you knew instantly why he is quickly carving out his place as one of the most exciting young singer-songwriters on the UK music scene. Known for his sparkling indie-rock sound, catchy melodies, and lyrics that delve into deeply relatable life moments, Tom captivated audiences from the get go. The show, part of Independent Venue Week, saw Tom sharing the bill with Girlband! but undoubtedly owning the stage during his set.
With a dynamic performance style and an effortless ability to connect with his audience, Tom showcased both fan favourites and new material. His hit song “Weirdo” stood out, its brilliance amplified by the crowds engagement, singing along to its heartfelt and quirky charm. A particularly striking moment for me came with the track “I don’t want you to have to remember me for longer than you ever knew me”. The audience hung on every word, drawn into the honesty and emotion that Tom brings to his craft.
Beyond his polished stage presence, Tom’s interaction with the crowd made the night special. He created an electric energy with his audience participation, further deepening the connection. After the performance, Tom took time to engage with fans, showing genuine appreciation for their support and leaving a lasting impression on everyone who attended.
Whether at Glastonbury, where he made a splash with his live performance, or more intimate venues like The Social, Tom A. Smith proved why he is a standout artist to watch.
This was the first time I’ve seen Tom A Smith it won’t be the last.
Girlband! were next up and this was my third time seeing them, my first being when they supported Jake Bugg, They are a powerhouse live act, delivering performances that are as memorable as they are electrifying. The Nottingham-based three-piece band composed of Georgie (lead guitar & vocal) Kay (bass) and Jada (drums) yet again delivered showing their distinctive style and sound.
Their set was a masterclass in how to connect with an audience and leave a lasting impression. Musically, Girlband! delivered a tight and engaging sound, with a wonderful bass undercurrent anchoring their songs, complemented by strong lead riffs that carried each track with purpose. Jada added a subtle but commanding presence on drums, bringing a dynamic balance to their sound. Every member of the band contributed to a live experience that was cohesive and powerful. With tight harmonies lead by the haunting voice of Georgie which has you buying into every song.
Their setlist was both entertaining and thought-provoking, with standout originals like “Not Like Rest” biographical anthem of individuality and “21st Century Suffragette”, song with a message that resonates deeply in todays world. These tracks showcase the band ability to craft lyrics with depth and relevance, giving listeners and gig goers something to think about long after the music ends.
A surprising highlight of the night was their brilliant cover of T-Rex, which brought a fresh, spirited energy to a classic track. Their chemistry with the audience was undeniable, creating an atmosphere of mutual respect and joy.
After the show, Georgie, Kay, and Jada took time to engage with fans, thanking everyone for their support and reinforcing their genuine connection with the people who came out to see them. Girlband! is clearly a band to watch, with talent, heart, and a sound that stays with you.
